Pittsburgh Kiddies
Kids in the Hall
An introductory post of some sorts.

I'm not even sure if this is a faux pas or whatnot, but I'm so completely out of my element in Pitt that I figured, "why the hell not?" If it is, my bad!

I'm Sonnya, I just moved to Pittsburgh not even a month ago after living 24 years in NYC just so I can go to school for social work. To be completely candid with everyone, its absolutely terrifying, but I do take comfort in the fact that your buses look exactly like NYC buses even though the whole Panther Card flashing is a bit different.

I just started class today (no Monday/Wednesday class for me, word!) and everything is so expansive. I'm not even used to the way everything is set up, but thankfully they just set up that Pitt Mobile nonsense so I can be one of "those" people. Never thought I would see the day I'm looking at my phone to help me get from point A to point B, but Pitt, you've bested me.

Whoever thought it would be a good idea to put the Victoria Building on a hill, way to go.

Anyways, the point of this was really to just introduce myself. I have a pet kitten, Momo, named after Avatar: The Last Airbender's flying lemur. I have a fiance, Chris. We live together in Friendship. I'm Colombian-American, fluent in Spanish, mediocre at French. I like people, I like helping people, I'm doing that as a major as stated above. Before I did Social Work, I went to school for Fashion Design at FIT in NYC, but decided that I kinda wanted a job when I graduated so now I make costumes for myself (and sometimes for others). I like Spider-Man. A lot. Only because I relate so much to him, great power, great responsibility, blah blah blah. I moonlight as a photographer when I'm feeling extra creative. I love documentaries, indie films, eating culturally-different foods and baking.

I'm looking for friends. God, that sounds SO LAME. But I literally only know my pet cat and my fiance, and frankly, there's only so much I can take of them before I start pulling my hair out. Schoolmates, lunch buddies, someone to shoot the shit with, someone I can dress up in costumes I create, I don't even know. I'd post my schedule up to see if we have any classes together, but that's just creepy... maybe.

I guess that's pretty much it. I can be reached via LJ, Twatter, Tumblr, AIM, or other various forms of social networking sites because I'm seriously all over the place.

Hi, I'm Allison. We have a mutual acquaintance/friend here (Patches/Amanda). (I used to have Chinese classes in Victoria Hall... which used to primarily be the nursing building. So I understand the annoyances with that hall.)

Welcome to Pitt/Pittsburgh. It probably feels ridiculously small town compared to NYC. I hate going to NYC and then coming back to Pittsburgh. Drives me crazy. Check out the Strip District for some of the ethnic stuff that you used to find in NYC. And also check out the Megabus for when you want to go back and visit and don't want to spend all the money to take a car. Take advantage of your Pitt ID too, it'll get you into the museums, Phipps Conservatory, and can get you discount tickets through Pitt. (I'm kicking myself I never visited Phipps while I was a student even though it was right there the whole time.)

I'm a Pitt graduate. I usually hang around this community to see if I can help anything with the stuff that I've experienced while at Pitt. I studied Chinese/Fiction Writing there. (I'm only 24... I don't want to come off as a creeper person.) I do costuming too, read comic books, enjoy baking when I have time and I also have a cat we call Momo. (His real name is Romo but he's a little special so he gets the nickname Momo...)

If you want, I can try to help you find things around the city that you are looking for. I know it's hard to make friends, especially the first week or so, and living off campus makes it more difficult. After I graduated, almost all of my friends moved away. I had to figure out how to make new friends and it was tough. You'll probably make friends in your classes, though it always took me a week or so to finally make friends with some of the people.

Good luck! I hope you end up enjoying Pitt. Let me know if you have any questions or anything else. :D

Oh, and since you put out there where you live, I live in Squirrel Hill. I also work in Oakland (right across from the Cathedral) so I'm there 4-5 days a week. :D

I'm a grad student at Pitt, 24, and I too live in Friendship with my cat(s)...not so much a boy though as he is out of state. You had me at a cat named after Momo, but having quick-stalked your user info I definitely think we could be friends. :)

I'm mostly over on blogspot except for community/fandom purpose around here, but I'm easily reached here or there (it's linked on my profile).
Thursday, September 2nd, 2010 (UTC) - Welcome to the Pitt!
Wow, small world! Spiderman made me d'aww, and then your username rang a bell. I'm Liz, a Pitt grad and costumer with what appear to be a lot of similar interests (comics, indie stuff, cultural food, etc). I was a commuter too, and getting to know people and your way around here really can be hard. Trin/Allison gave some good advice, so I won't overload, but let me know if you have any questions, or if you'd like to hang out sometime. I live near Bellevue with my fiance Matt and two cats (Bonnie and Clyde).

I'm old and no longer live in Pittsburgh, but welcome. If you wee fine in NYC, you'll be fine in 'da 'burgh. :)
